Ten Interview Questions For The Next Big Thing

What is the working title for your book?

Answer: My Life Sentences – A True Story

Thumbnail3761402Where did the idea come from?

Where do I start describing this? In brief, this not beinga work of fiction, you would imagine it being totally different as far as ideas are concerned. This is about everything I have been through, each step of the way. The lows and the highs. After struggling through certain things in life and being fortunate enough to have what I have at the same time, I decided to share my personal story by writing a book!

What genre does your book fall under?

Non-fiction (Autobiography as many would call it).

Which character would you choose to play your character in a movie rendition?:

I thought about this really carefully and I settled with Lance Gross!

lance gross

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

That is a really tough question! Either way, I will give my best shot. I (author), had to make a decision as to whether I should continue my dreams or give up!

Was your book self-published or represented by an agency?

I decided to take the self-publishing route through both Amazon and Createspace (which is an affiliate of Amazon). There are several reasons but I will mention the obvious: It is totally free. Secondly, the royalties are 70% for ebooks and relatively higher for print! Self-publishing is the way to go if you don’t want to wait years for an agency that will pay you peanuts.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

It took a while to complete writing my first draft. That was because I kept debating whether I should actually publish my personal story for the world to see or keep it to myself. I had been dreaming of writing a book for years and when time was right, I bought some pens and a note book and started writing! Since I didn’t have to do a lot of research (everything was within my fingertips), it took me a relatively shorter time than other genres would take.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

Good question. Let me see, well, I think after going through the challenges that I went through, and still being fortunate enough or as I would say, blessed, all I had to do was to look around me, see where I had been from, and picture the future. That inspired me more than anything else.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

Do you love travelling the world? If you answered yes, then my book is based on two different continents! That is, part of it in Africa and the other part in the United States. Difference in cultures is made quite clear and all sorts of stereotypes are hands-on. Has someone ever asked you if you lived on a tree? I didn’t think so. Well, I have been asked that. Or whether I lived with wild animals like lions or cheetahs. Crazy world!

Wanna Write Like A Pro?

Aside

Hi! Today, I thought sharing a few tips on how to bring out the best in you as a writer might help. Last time I shared a few ideas on how to get more traffic and many people liked it. As an aspiring writer, I have come to realize that the question of writing what people want to read has always gone unanswered. Have you ever wished you wrote your articles, columns, books etc better? I know you have. Let us crack this shell. I will jump straight to the points.

  • After reading so many articles on news sites, I felt like around the corner somewhere, somebody had to say something about the shortcomings of the writers of the same. One thing you need to do before jumping onto your keyboard to write anything is your subject. Answering the ‘what am I going to write about?’ question will help you exhaust the depths of the topic. Make short notes, think through each key point and make sure that important arguments come first.
  • After mastering your concept, you are now ready to type something – but anyone can type right? The point is this: to avoid embarrassing yourself in the face of the world, plan out which paragraphs will come first. In high school, my English teacher told me that every story should have a beginning, a middle and an ending. So, what goes to the beginning of the story? Some people jump the rope quite often, spilling all the secrets in the first paragraph. That is not good.
  • In my English 102, my professor told me that I needed to introduce the readers into what is awaiting them. Doing so need care because the risk of breaking the rule is high. Using a theses statement helps to motivate the readers just enough by preparing their minds for more details later down the road. If you are writing about a recent rise in texting and driving related accidents in your local town, you don’t jump straight to last week’s incident(you might be tempted to do this thinking it will make readers hooked).
  • Assuming you have successfully hooked your readers with a great theses statement, to make it even more interesting, argue your points one by one without forgetting evidence or proof. Many people like works that have backup and of course they have to be realistic and non-exaggerated. All you are doing here is building the main body of your writing, so, make sure that everything you write flow smoothly and use connecting phrases between points and paragraphs.
  • Depending on how long your work is, make sure you avoid repetitions and any form of poor grammar. Now, say that you have finished writing out your big points and you are taking a short break, where do you go next? Since you wrote out your arguments before the break, you need to offer some viable solutions to the problems for instance caused by texting and driving. Obviously, not all types of writing have this sort of format. Regardless, remember to give proposals that are reasonable. Each problem will have one or more possible solutions in its own paragraph.
  • Almost done! You have written your arguments out, you have offered your thoughtful suggestions and now you are almost ready to close your document window. So what? Here is my take: according to my professor and as I have come to learn all these years, you need a conclusion. Make it simple and clear. Do not start writing the whole story all over again. Do not use the same words, just rephrase what your theses statement says – just remember to be clever enough not to look stupid. Ooops! You are done. Good job.

One good thing about using a template (software developers might agree with me here) is that regardless of the story you are working on, the structure will almost certainly remain the same. What you are doing is implementing it. Are you working on a book? Follow the same steps and of course add more great stuff. Are you working on column? What about a letter to your congressman or woman? All you are trying to do is to bring out the best, passing the correct information to whoever is reading your article and in the end, reducing the number of badly written stories out there. Simply, give substance to your work!

Finally, sometimes being too careful might hurt you. Often being careless will definitely hurt you. The best you can do is write an article people will thirst for more. How do you know if your work is the best? When someone reads the first chapter and they can’t wait to reach the second one and then the third one and till the end. That is enough for now. Hope you get something good from all these paragraphs I have written. If you have questions, let me know through the comments section or the contact page.

How To Make Money From eBooks

Image

Today, am out to show you some of the tested and proven ways that will move you from your couch(no offense) to the mailbox and finally to the bank! Is it that easy? Not really. After all, if it was that simple, everyone would have done it right? The good news is that you can do it today or tomorrow or well, never! Let us get started. What if you made some money from books?

It is not surprising to know that many people would rather take the easy routes when it comes to making mmmm money! Ever heard of the saying ‘Too good to be true’? You probably have, but if not, then you now know it. There are thousands of ways you could use to make a living but tonight, I will spare myself some time by talking about what I have done and worked for me. So, let us see how you could write your first book, publish and cash some royalty checks in a few months.

  • First, if you believe that everybody has a story to tell, then you probably have one yourself. If you don’t belong to that community of story tellers, well, this might not be for you after all. No offense! Now, the biggest question is this: how do you start writing a book in the first place? The answer could be found in thousands of books on how to write or simply deciding to start working on your manuscript after you finish reading this post. Here is my advice: stop postponing things and start writing a rough draft of your future bestseller. If you need help on doing that, let me know through the comments.
  • At first I was a little surprised by the fact that some people do not have word processors in their home computers. I am not surprised anymore because I have come to know that not all people can afford the software or are tech savvy enough to learn of the vast number of free equally – capable tools online. Don’t sweat it further if you are that person because I got your back. If you do not have Microsoft Word, smile and when you are done reading this post, zoom back here and check these great links out:
  1. Free Google Docs – This is one of the many things Google provides users for Free(well, to an extent). Here, after you create a free account, you can create basically any type of document you want and save it to the cloud and later access it from virtually anywhere through an internet connection. You are assured of security here, so, go for it if you need it.
  2. Microsoft SkyDrive – This is another Free tool offered by Microsoft (this is so cool because if you cannot afford Microsoft Office programs, all you need is a free account here and you are good to go). Your documents will be available to you from anywhere. All you will need is an internet connection. You don’t even need a flash drive.
  3. OpenOffice Word Editor – This is the best rival to Microsoft Office. The good part is this: It is free of charge. There are really great guys out there working so hard to bring you the best tools for the price of zero dollars. That is one of the ways we could all make this world a better place, don’t you think? Anyway, those are the few I could think of. If you have more, why not share through the comments section? Thank you. Now, back to the tips.
  • Thirdly, let us assume you have written your draft and you want to know your next step. One thing that readers hate is unedited work. I mainly think of it this way: if you do not like poor grammar, then no one else does. So, edit your book as many times as possible. You are trying to convince a stranger to spend some money and if you understand marketing, you know what am talking about. This is not rocket science. You can choose to hire a professional editor or get some of your cool friends and relatives(Warning: you might be disappointed by their criticisms and you risk losing them). Do everything you need to make your work smooth and easily readable. How much should you spend preparing your book for publishing? That is a big question. My answer is simple: Do not borrow a thousand dollar loan for it. Find people who can edit your book for the least possible. Watch out for scam artists out there who might charge you thousands of dollars for what your sister or co-worker could do for a thank you!
  • Your book, hopefully is now near ready for publishing. Where do I go from here? Well, you can choose to go the traditional route (also known as sending your manuscript to sometimes mean agents) or self-publishing (otherwise known as do – it – yourself but so cheap and 75% royalties). At the moment, I am going to focus on self-publishing on Amazon Kindle Store. The good thing about it is this: millions of people own kindle tablets and publishing is FREE. You earn royalties at rates you will never believe and your books are accessible to ….well, everyone with a Kindle all over the world?? At least that is what I know from my experience.
  • Is your book ready for publishing? If you answered yes, then visit the Kindle Direct Publishing site and start making some serious money pal. You basically have everything you need at this point to turn your dream into a reality. I did it by getting off the couch and writing(pen and paper) a chapter each night, editing several times and finally publishing My Life Sentences – A True Story and Across The River both of which are available now on Amazon. Good luck.

My final word is this: Nothing is easy in this world. The only way to draw a thick line between you and someone who says nothing can be done or you cannot be an author is by actually writing. Start tonight or after you finish your dinner or even after shower. Talking about showers, ideas normally trickle down my brain when am in the shower. Crazy. Anyway, I want to read your book in the future. Share a link here and if you have questions, ask me. What and why are you waiting for? See you soon and good luck!

Have a beautiful day everyone!
