Ten Interview Questions For The Next Big Thing

What is the working title for your book?

Answer: My Life Sentences – A True Story

Thumbnail3761402Where did the idea come from?

Where do I start describing this? In brief, this not beinga work of fiction, you would imagine it being totally different as far as ideas are concerned. This is about everything I have been through, each step of the way. The lows and the highs. After struggling through certain things in life and being fortunate enough to have what I have at the same time, I decided to share my personal story by writing a book!

What genre does your book fall under?

Non-fiction (Autobiography as many would call it).

Which character would you choose to play your character in a movie rendition?:

I thought about this really carefully and I settled with Lance Gross!

lance gross

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

That is a really tough question! Either way, I will give my best shot. I (author), had to make a decision as to whether I should continue my dreams or give up!

Was your book self-published or represented by an agency?

I decided to take the self-publishing route through both Amazon and Createspace (which is an affiliate of Amazon). There are several reasons but I will mention the obvious: It is totally free. Secondly, the royalties are 70% for ebooks and relatively higher for print! Self-publishing is the way to go if you don’t want to wait years for an agency that will pay you peanuts.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

It took a while to complete writing my first draft. That was because I kept debating whether I should actually publish my personal story for the world to see or keep it to myself. I had been dreaming of writing a book for years and when time was right, I bought some pens and a note book and started writing! Since I didn’t have to do a lot of research (everything was within my fingertips), it took me a relatively shorter time than other genres would take.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

Good question. Let me see, well, I think after going through the challenges that I went through, and still being fortunate enough or as I would say, blessed, all I had to do was to look around me, see where I had been from, and picture the future. That inspired me more than anything else.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

Do you love travelling the world? If you answered yes, then my book is based on two different continents! That is, part of it in Africa and the other part in the United States. Difference in cultures is made quite clear and all sorts of stereotypes are hands-on. Has someone ever asked you if you lived on a tree? I didn’t think so. Well, I have been asked that. Or whether I lived with wild animals like lions or cheetahs. Crazy world!

Bring Your Dog To Work Day..

Today, after going out for a walk in a scorching sun, I just couldn’t think of anything cool to write about until late in the evening when I was researching ListProperty() data type storage in Google App Engine Datastore. I got distracted by something just as cool. As my title suggest, it has something to do with, well, dogs and jobs. Let us get to it!

While doing my searches on YouTube, I stumbled upon a video which led to another video and then a few more clicks down the road and I was digitally miles away from where I started. One video stood out: one that showed what working at Google is like! Is it cool? Heck yeah! Would I love to work there? Heck yeah I would! Am happy with what I have though!

You see, here is the thing; if you happen to love animals and your employer allows you to bring your tiny dog with you to work and provide you with a push scooter to move around the complex, I would suggest you just knock yourself out and live it up – for a good cause of course! Not many people get that more often. Anyway, am talking about dream jobs here. Some people have some and some take what they get!

A few months ago, a software company near my city posted a job opening in my local paper and among other things were a competitive pay, a relaxed environment where you could sit on a couch and write code, leave workplace at your own will (this comes with deadlines, if you can keep them, why should someone be on your back?), and then this last one was cool: you can choose to use stairs or an elevator while going from a higher floor to a lower one or if you like to have fun, they had a sliding tube! Holy cow, that was awesome! It was like going through a water tunnel at an amusement park! Give me that please, with fries! (jk)

So, as much as they say that only 2% of graduates actually use their degrees and the rest doing totally different things from what they went to school for, what is your dream job? Who is your dream employer? Do you think it is still possible to have dreams come true? Tell me through the comments because I would love to read them.

My final word is this: if you love what you do, keep doing it. If you however don’t feel good about what you do, keep working hard towards your goals in life. Dreams come true, and if you ask anyone out there, they will tell you the truth, even if they might have not succeeded themselves for some reasons. Never surrender to failure. Keep your head up. You can be what you want to be, just a little more effort will take you there! Good Luck!

One More Certificate, Even More Skills

I am back again with a new certificate from Udacity Online University. I have been creating posts about this genius idea that turned out to be Udacity! I just can’t get enough of it I think. Well, we are currently on a break until June 25th 2012 when new courses and classes will start. If you would like to be part of this academic revolution, the process is as simple as 1 + 1. Just visit Udacity Online University and create an account for free, then pick your classes and start learning from the best teachers on earth!

Since I have been there for two hexamesters now, I think I know what it is all about. The main agenda is to teach people real skills, applicable anytime for a price of FREE. What are you waiting for?

What you see above is my certificate from a course named ‘Web Application Engineering‘ where we learned how to build blogs using python and the incredible Google App Engine(free). Since the end of that class a few weeks ago, a friend and I have been working on a web application that could help retailers (small scale) by making their work easier. Writing python code has never been this fun! Better than chocolate!

So why am I snapping photos of my certificates and sharing them with you? Simple. I am not trying to brag or do anything evil. I want to encourage whoever is interested but has been discouraged by other things to get on board and start learning new skills. I have never been so excited in my life. I am glad I chose to write code instead of studying medicine and that is not to say medicine is a bad thing..they make a lot of cash I am told..!

Finally, here are a few tips to help you get started learning to program. You are free to choose whichever interests you. This is a free world, free tools, free choices. Remember that freedom is not free, however!

That is good for now but I will be posting new resources when I come across them. Thank you for checking out my blog and please remember to subscribe (check the right hand side of the page). Stay informed and see you soon!
